A hei matau is a pendant (hei in Maori), traditionally carved in bone or in nephrite, that represents a hook in a very stylized way (matau). It is a typical jewel of the Maori people of New Zealand. They represent strength, good fortune and are a charm to travel safely on the water. It originates from the myth of Maui, a civilizing hero of Polynesia, who, according to the Maori, fished the islands from the bottom of the sea with his magic hook.
It is today one of the most characteristic objects of Maori culture with the hei-tiki.
